NORTHEAST CONFERENCE ON SCIENCE & SKEPTICISM TO CONVENE IN APRIL
The fifth Northeast Conference on Science & Skepticism (NECSS – pronounced “nexus”) will welcome over 500 attendees to New York City for three days of presentations, panel discussions, and workshops celebrating science education, critical-thinking, and skeptical inquiry. NECSS 2013 will be held April 5-7, 2013 at Haft Auditorium, 227 W. 27th St., New York, NY 10001.
NECSS attendees will be educated and entertained by a diverse array of speakers with backgrounds ranging from physics and philosophy to medicine and magic; from journalism and paranormal investigation to opera and funk music.
The conference keynote will be given by noted physicist Dr. Leonard Mlodinow, author of the #1 bestseller The Grand Design (with Stephen Hawking), The Drunkard’s Walk: How Randomness Rules Our Lives and Subliminal: How Our Unconscious Mind Rules Our Behavior. Dr. Mlodinow teaches at the California Institute of Technology and has also written for the television series MacGyver, Star Trek: The Next Generation, and Night Court.
Additional speakers will include British journalist Simon Singh; Mariette DiChristina, editor-in-chief of Scientific American magazine; Michael Shermer, publisher of Skeptic magazine; Shaifali Puri, executive director of Scientists Without Borders; Jim Holt, author of Why Does the World Exist? An Existential Detective Story; neuroscientist Dr. Heather Berlin; Massimo Pigliucci and Julia Galef, co-hosts of the Rationally Speaking podcast; and almost twenty more leading figures from the sciences, journalism and entertainment.
“This year’s conference is particularly exciting, given our array of presenters,” said conference organizing committee member and emcee Jamy Ian Swiss, a world-renowned magician and author. “This will be my fourth year emceeing NECSS and I cannot remember a conference with the breadth and depth of talent we are gathering for 2013. I could not be more thrilled to once again help educate and entertain our attendees as we celebrate the wonders of science and the benefits of viewing the world with a rational mind and a skeptical eye.
NECSS 2013 will also feature a live taping of The Skeptics Guide to the Universe, a top-ten iTunes ranked science podcast and radio show, and the 2012 People’s Choice Podcast Award winner for best science podcast. The Skeptics Guide to the Universe is hosted by Dr. Steve Novella, Rebecca Watson, Jay Novella, Evan Bernstein, and Bob Novella.
NECSS is a non-profit, educational conference co-produced by the New England Skeptical Society (www.theness.com) and New York City Skeptics (www.nycskeptics.org).
